Mostly quotable quotes come from someone great, great thinkers, great speakers, great leaders and authors. But sometime someone who is not expected to speak wisdom words, gives some great insight. Same happened with me today. Was sitting with a Goldsmith in his workshop. While he was working, he expressed his dis-satisfaction with his current job. He was of the view that own-business is better than working for someone else. Not a new concept. But during this conversation he said a sentence which I found quotable. In Hindi, he said:

“Saab, Naukari to aisi hai, bhukha marne nahi degi, aage badne nahi degi”

Translated to English it will be:

“Working for someone else ensures you will not die of hunger, but it also ensures you will not go far in life”

May be his saying was little exaggerated, or may be true from his own living standards. But he has touched a vital point.

I am sure, most of you must have read about Rich Dad’s Cashflow Quadrant. He divides all of us into four parts based on how we generate income.

E is for Employee

S is for Self-Employed or Specialist

B is for Big Business

I is for Investor

E & S focus on earning income and greatly value a safe, secure job or career. On the right side, B & I focus on creating assets to income source using other people’s time and money.

Most of us have been confused about choosing between B or E. Whereas B ensures financial freedom, E ensures financial security. It’s always to difficult to choose.

That Goldsmith was also sure he doesn’t want to work someone else for his lifetime. But he was also not sure when will be the correct time when he will start his small own workshop. I fear his financial conditions might never allow him to do this.

Are you also confused between B or E?

It was a great pleasure to read The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann three years back. The book conveyed Five Principles of Stratospheric Success. The book was marvelous and reminded us of the principles which we all knew but somehow thought were not relevant in today’s cut-throat competition where one need to be go-getter. I posted My Blogpost about the Book three years back on my blog. The book had a great impact and when I knew these wonderful authors are coming up with thier new book, I was very excited to read it.

After waiting for 15 days, it was here. In my hand, my own copy of “It’s Not About You“. The title of book is “It’s Not About You : A Little Story About What Matters Most in Business”, but it should be “A Little Story About What Matters Most in Life”. Yes, the title of book says it all, Business as well as Life is not about you. Not about leader, its about others. It’s about People around you and that’s what we miss by being go-getter.

Although book gives principles of leadership in form of ‘Ben’s Menifesto’, but I consider it a book which goes beyond words. Rather than just giving some principles of leadership, it gives a new concept about leadership, a new way to look at leadership. So dont get caught in the principles, look at the broader concept these principles try to highlight. As Osho said ”When I point my finger to moon, dont look at my finger, look at moon. My finger is not moon.”

Earlier with ‘The Go Giver‘ and now with ‘It’s Not About You‘, Bob and John are sharing with all of us a new way of living. For Example, Ben learned about ‘Influence’:

“The best way to increase your influence is to give it away.“

“The Substance of influence is pull…… not push.“

“Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.”

“The moment you begin thinking that it’s all about you, that you’re the deal, is the moment you begin losing your capacity to positively influence others’ lives.”

As in their last book, they are highlighting the principles which are so obvious yet so overlooked. This time also they tell it through such an engaging story that it conveys their ideas beyond the words. The story is illustrated in such a narrative way that you feel you are there with Ben and you want to see him succeed. That’s the most important thing about this book, when you feel like being part of the story, you get the principles beyond just words, you get the whole concept. Bob and John are master story tellers. It is a perfect story with all emotions that keeps you involved yet never loses its way in conveying the very essentials. Ben’s conversation with his son ‘Robbie’, his visit to Phoebe’s Grand Mother, Aunt Elle asking Ben if he has lost someone, there are numerous places where you will feel its more than a management book, its about Life.

There is a lot I can write about this book, but as I said, this book tries to convey something beyond words and I will not be able to convey much unless you read it yourself. Before I leave you with some of my favourite parts of this book, I will Congratulate My Great Friends Bob and John for again writing such a master piece. I will suggest you read it yourself, not any summary, the whole book from first page to last, if possible more than once. Again when you read, Dont get caught in Principles of Leadership, look at the bigger picture these principles are pointing to. Dont look at the finger, look at the moon.

Some of My Favourite Parts of Book:

“The Less you say, the more influence you’ll have.”

“The hard part isn’t the vision. Anyone can come up with a vision. The part is the holding. As a leader, your job is to hold fast to the big picture, to keep seeing in your mind’s eye, with crystal clarity, where it is you’re going-that place that right at this moment exists only in your mind’s eye. And to keep seeing that, even when nobody else does….. Especially when nobody else does”

“Give people something goog to live up to – something great – and they usually will. In fact, often they’ll even exceed those expectations.”

“You don’t have to be brilliant. The brilliant will take care of itself. You just need to do the work. And not only because it needs doing, but also because that’s the only way you’ll generate real respect.”

“Self respect is where every other kind of respect comes from. Respect from others is a reflection, not the source.”

“People will only trust someone when they know where he stands. Where do you stand? And what do you stand for?”

“Life leaves a mark. None of us passes through the experiece of our days unblemished or pristine. We all suffer tragedies and disappointments, struggles and failures. Losses great and small, and every one of them hurts. We can try to cover it up, although if we do, we just tend to grow bitter on the inside. Or, we can embrace who we are – that is, who we are in the process of becoming. Embrace the hurt and it deepens you, makes you a richer person. Deny, reject, hold it at bat, fight it off, and it simply hardens you. Either way, it engraves itself onto your soul.”

“Whatever great parenting looks like, it is not about the parent. Great teaching is not about the teacher. Great coaching is not about the coach. And great leadership is not about …………”

As today CA PCC/IPCC results were declared, the air was filled with different moods. Happy, Sad, Lost……..

Those who cleared it, were on top of the world, so should they be. But it’s just a stepping stone, you have long way to go. In fact every success is just a stepping stone and not a destination. You can celebrate, relax for a minute or two and then start moving again. It’s good that success is not a destination otherwise how boring it would be. If there is any success or goal which is ultimate destination and I need not go ahead from there, it will be last thing I would like to achieve. So be thankful that success is temporary and just a milestone for further journey. And never forget this truth.

As it is with any CA Result, there will more students who would have failed than who passed. I would also congratulate those who have failed.

Surprised?

No, I am not kidding, I am actually congratulating you for failure. I am not being sarcastic either.

Failure is something which you can defer in life but can’t avoid. Sooner you experience it in your life, stronger you will become. You must have heard about ‘Dengue’ fever. It is dangerous and sometime fatal. But once you encounter ‘Dengue’ fever and recover from it, you will never get affected by it again in life. Your body develops resistance towards it. So, though no one wants to suffer from ‘Dengue’, but if you have got it, one thing is sure you just need to survive this time and you will be safe for rest of the life.

So, itn’t it a reason to celebrate? It is……

What if you have failed more than once? Dont worry….. So is ‘Dengue’. ‘Dengue’ can occur because of four different

but related strains of dengue virus. If a person has suffered from one virus, there can be a repeat occurrence of dengue if a different strain is involved subsequently. So more times you catch ‘Dengue’, lesser are chances to get it again. So more you fail, more strong you become…..

I like what Thomas Edison, the greatest inventor and innovator said:

“I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work”.

There is one more reason to be thankful about failure. Failure makes you humble. Every time you fail, you come close to reality of life. You appreciate the pains and problems of those who have not got everything in life. Failure makes you human. Failure makes you a better person. What you learn from failure, you can never learn from success.

Show me someone who says he has never ever failed in anything in life and I will show you a ‘Liar’.

Everyone fails sometime or other in life. There are few who accept it and very few who learn from it. Learn from your mistakes, improve and re-attack. As a famous saying goes, “When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”

Last but not the least, never blame Luck or Fate. In fact, never blame anyone for your failures not even yourself. Blaming means you think there is something wrong with failing. No, as I said first be thankful for failure. If you are thankful for failure, there is no need to blame. Just learning from failure and moving ahead with more power, more focus and more determination. Start afresh, you will do it……

Yesterday when I received a letter bearing sender as ‘Google India‘, it was hard to imagine what it could be, without opening the envelope. I guessed, the only way Google uses postal service is to send offer letters to its new hires. This was not possible in my case as I had never applied for the Google jobs. And I was not expecting dividend cheque from Google eitherJ. So I finally decided to break the suspense and open the envelope. It was bigger surprise as it was Advertisement Material for Google Adwords. It was strange to see Online Marketing Giant using traditional way of Marketing. The Google has not only captured the most of online marketing space in the market, it has also made old marketing methods redundant. Now online advertisement/marketing product is being advertised through offline marketing.

Google which has given new face to emails, is using traditional mails to market its product. But if we think a bit more, it seems to be wise idea. With the increasing trend of marketing emails, we tend to ignore such emails and email marketing loses relevance in such cases. Many times I have not read Google Adwords email, but I had to open this package as it did not have anything on outside envelope to suggest what it was. We might have become tech-savy but we still like to receive colourful flyers and unknown postal emails still fascinate us. So this internet giant has again used a unique way of marketing, may be not new but still very relevant. My takes from this:

Today special court held Kasab guilty in 26/11 case. I would really be surprisde if there is anyone in coutry who is surprised with this judgement. But there was one thing which surprised me and which was neve expected, statement by Home Minster P.C.

Home Minister said that this judgement is lesson for Pakistan that it should not send terrorists to India. Does it really matters for pakistan? They sent all the terrorist knowing that they will be killed, if one of them is killed after 2 years, what lesson will they learn. Were they expecting indian courts will free kasab.

Is it really a win for us or only way left to release our frustration. Last week two things were in news…. alerts issued by US to its nationals in India that there is terrorist attack threat and talk between Indian PM and Pak PM both at same time….. Do we really want pakistan to learn a lesson…. we will talk to them, then after some time some other terrorist will kill 167 more people and we will celebrate when he will be held guilty….. held guilty for an act which whole nation saw live on national news channel and we are happy to prove that in court….

Are we still sure we will be able to release our frustration with Kasab’s verdict or he will get the same fate as Mohd. Afzal….. Do we really want to do something????

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, ‘What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?’

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: ‘Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.’

To stress his point he said to another guest; ‘You’re a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?’

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, ‘You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began…)

” Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can’t make them sit for 5 minutes without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental.
You want to know what I make ? “
(She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

” I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn’t everything.
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made
calculator.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One Nation Under God, because we live in the United States of America.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.”

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

‘Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn’t everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant…

You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE . What do you make Mr. CEO?’
His jaw dropped, he went silent.
